Mr Matthew Dodd BSc MFSEM FRCS (Tr Orth)

Mr Dodd specialises in surgery of the hip and knee. He treats conditions that cause hip and knee pain ranging from acute sporting or traumatic injuries that has resulted in ligament or cartilage damage through the early aches and pains of arthritis until the need for joint replacement. This includes complex hip and knee keyhole surgery. Treating hip impingement conditions (FAI), knee ligament reconstruction (ACL); meniscal cartilage repair or removal; and cartilage defect surgery or preservation in both the hip and knee. These are mostly done as day case procedures. He performs joint replacements with tried and tested implants. The choice of surgery and implants he uses includes partial joint replacement and bone preservation implants when suitable but most importantly choosing the right operation for each patient.

Joint replacement short stay and rapid recovery programmes aim to reduce length of stay to 1 or 2 days after surgery and have paitents up and mobile by day 1.

The Nuffield Cardiff Bay and Vale Hospitals

The Vale Hospital is a purpose built modern hospital located in beautiful surroundings and is a very therapeutic environment in which to be treated and to rehabilitate following surgery.

The Vale Hospital is located near Junction 34 of the M4 to the west of Cardiff and is a 26-bed hospital, with two fully digital ultra clean air operating theatres, as well as an excellent Physiotherapy department, including purpose built gym and Outpatients and Diagnostic services. This is the only true clean, green surgical, COVID free site in Wales, with all non surgical investigations and outpatient visits moved to the Cardiff Bay diagnostic centre.

Mr. Dodd has a weekly clinic at the Nuffield Cardiff Bay Hospital and regular operating lists for both day case and inpatient procedures.

The New Sancta Maria Hospital - SA1

Sancta Maria Hospital is a new, not for profit hospital owned by a Charity  (The Healthcare Management Trust), which allows them to reinvest the surplus back into the hospital and attract the best consultants and staff whilst keeping our costs down to ensure the highest level of healthcare are as accessible as possible for the community we serve.

The new Sancta Maria moved to its state of the art facility in Feburary 2021, with on site diagnsotics and new ultra clean operating theatre suites. Innovative peri-operative care has allowed the new hospital to intiate day case joint replacement for suitable patients, reducing the length of stay and encouraging early rehabilitation and faster recovery.

Mr. Dodd has weekly Monday and Tuesday appointments as part of Swansea Clinics at Sancta Maria with weekly operating lists for keyhole and joint replacement surgery.

NHS care at Morriston and Neath Port Talbot hospitals

Mr. Dodd performs his NHS operations at both hospitals. The majority of the arthrosopic surgery is performed in day case unit at the purpose built unit at Neath and Port Talbot.

More complex operations and all NHS joint replacements ar performed at the main Swansea University Hospital site at Morriston.

Pre and Post-op rehabilitation is with the highly skilled physiotherapy team attached to the Musculoskeletal department within ABMU Health Board and all the physios are encouraged to discuss cases directly with Mr. Dodd if they have any concerns with their patients.

Private Physiotherapy

Mr Dodd uses a select group of physiotherapists that cover the South Wales area and that are experienced in rehabilitating the conditions that we commonly treat. Appointments and clinics can be booked directly with physiotherapists that are local to you, with teams at both the Nuffield Vale and Sancta Maria hospitals as well as private physio in North Swansea and in SA1.
